The internet is buzzing as Studio Ghibli-inspired art takes social media by storm, but not everyone is celebrating. Megumi Ishitani, a renowned director from the hit anime One Piece, has publicly expressed her dissatisfaction with the viral AI-generated Studio Ghibli art trend, calling it an “unauthorized” misuse of the iconic studio’s style. This controversy, sparked by OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4o image generation tool, has ignited debates about creativity, copyright, and the future of anime artistry as of April 8, 2025.

 

Megumi Ishitani, celebrated for directing some of One Piece’s most acclaimed episodes, isn’t alone in her frustration. She echoes sentiments long held by Hayao Miyazaki himself, who famously called AI-generated animation “an insult to life itself” in a 2016 documentary. For Ishitani and many fans, the mass production of Ghibli-style images via AI undermines the painstaking craftsmanship that defines the studio’s work—each frame traditionally drawn by hand with unparalleled attention to detail.

The One Piece director’s demand for legal action highlights broader concerns in the anime community. As AI tools like ChatGPT mimic iconic styles without permission, artists worry about copyright infringement and the devaluation of human creativity.
